Pluk de Nacht, founded in 2003 out of dissatisfaction with the lack of distribution of arthouse gems, is still alive and kicking in 2025. This summer, the beloved outdoor film festival descends on the Stenen Hoofd (Aug. 20-30), while Utrecht is also hosting an edition from Aug. 7-16.
The Stone Head spot is more than a viewing spot: a festival site with bar, bonfire, art installations, games and silent disco parties after the movie. The city beach is easily accessible (bus 48 or bike/run from CS), and on summer days you can even watch Sail Amsterdam in between..
Each evening kicks off with short films around 9:15 p.m., followed by the main show. Live music beforehand and afterglow with dancing or campfire provide a distinct festival feel. Tickets cost €9.50 (+€1.50 entertainment tax), including beach chair, and are available both through presale and at the box office.
Sunday afternoon, Aug. 24, is dedicated to Pluk MINI: a free program for families with young children (2+), including circus tent, beanbags and lemonade. On Friday and Saturday nights, Pluk MINI plays for older kids in the tent, while adults enjoy the evening film outside.
What to expect? An eclectic mix from world festivals (Cannes, Berlin, Venice) featuring quirky arthouse gems, stark documentaries, zany animations and titles that will stay with you for days to come. Think early Taika Waititi and Maren Ade debuts, or experimental AI shorts.
